*2. COLOMBIA: STUDENT LEADER MURDERED

On Jan. 7 rightwing paramilitaries assassinated university
student leader Marcos Salazar Prado in front of his girlfriend
and their two young children in the southern Colombian city of
Pasto, Narino department. Salazar was a student representative to
the Narino University Superior Council and a member of the
Colombian Association of University Students (ACEU). Salazar had
asked for protection from the Interior Ministry since last
August; he and his family had received numerous threats, and his
father survived an attack last September in the city of Tumaco.

*3. COLOMBIA: TALKS, VIOLENCE CONTINUE

Colombian government representatives and leaders of the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were meeting again
on Jan. 20 in another effort to reach some kind of agreement
before a new deadline expired on midnight that night. A previous
deadline of Jan. 14 had been extended to give the peace talks
another chance [see Update #624]. While the talks continued, so
did the armed conflict: on Jan. 18, the FARC forced down a
helicopter on a a drug crop eradication mission in southern
Caqueta province and killed five anti-narcotics agents; on Jan.
19 FARC rebels blew up an army vehicle near the city of Cali,
killing four soldiers; and later that day, eight soldiers were
killed nearby trying to fend off a rebel offensive. [Miami Herald
