AFP. 28 January 2002. Maoists kill 11, including nine police, in
northern India.

RANCHI -- Maoist rebels have killed 11 people, including nine policemen,
in the northern Indian state of Ranchi in a landmine blast, police said
Monday.

The Maoists triggered the mine on Sunday evening, blowing up a vehicle
carrying nine members of the Jharkhand Armed Police, all of whom died on
the spot.

Two other people on a motorbike were killed in the explosion, said
additional director general of police R.R. Prasad.

The police vehicle was ambushed while returning from a village fair.
