At least Jabber and MSN support this on their serverside contactlist. Also i would like to see group merged with addressbook categories, and i think a contact may be in several categories. However, simpler is generally better, and it's true that this make the code quite more complex, specially for a feature which is not widely used. Also, the top-level group should stay IMO.
