This is a good point. If Akonadi can handle most of the job of maintaining contacts in multiple groups (and therefore reduce the job done in kopete), then I don't think it will be that difficult to keep support for this. But if kopete is the one who will have to take care of handling most of the job, then I don't think it is worth keeping the support for this.
