Have you seen or used Adium on Mac OS X? They do something very similar. They 
have a status title that's displayed in the window while you're away, but the 
message can be something totally different. Please do the same for all of 
Kopete's statuses. I imagine you'll probably end up with the beginnings of a 
new status message manager as well. (something everybody seems to want)
