just provide the password to let it install, and objection to such
things merely indicated I didn't understand The UNIX Way.

Ah. Well I say The UNIX Way is that a program should install in whatever space you want it in, unless there's a really good reason otherwise, and a word processor has no good reason otherwise, let alone a really good one.

Might depend on how it installs. I agree with Todd, but RPM's require root access to modify the RPMdb...They shouldn't if a user makes in install in a private area. That ability should be available.
