Debian GNU/Linux.
A really nice distro that I've recently played with is BeatrIX. It's based on Debian, and uses the Ubuntu repository.
It's distributed as a live CD (~180MB) that can be installed to hard disk. It's supposed to run fine on any Pentium class machine (the authors purposely developed on an underpowered machine to make certain.) It includes GNOME 2.8, OpenOffice.org 1.1, Firebird 1.0, Evolution 2.0.
I found it very snappy on a PII 366 MHz laptop, and that was running off the CD. I imagine it'll run even nicer when installed to hard disk. This distro is definitely worth a try.
