DJA,
You are of course entitled to your opinion. I won't deny you that.

How very formal, and yet so condescending a way to reply to a post on a mailing list. Puzzling.

However, I do disagree with your opinion that the author did not lose any money. Perhaps not a quantifiable amount due to this one single instance, ...

Well, which is it, he lost money (=value) or he didn't lose money by this one posting?

...but certainly the overall value of author whose work is published on the web,

Depending of course on the answer to the question above.

and subsequently stolen ...

Whatever else was done, nothing was stolen. A copyright was violated, yes, but nothing was stolen. Prosecution would be for copyright violation not robbery, burglary, larceny, etc. Apparently the RIAA et. al. have been very effective in their propaganda campaign.

and posted all over without links or attribution will decrease the dollar value of works published in a similar way.

Yes, were that the case. We're talking about one specific posting of one specific article by one specific author on one specific mailing list. Not the rampant illicit mass reproduction and mis-attribution of everything every paid author in the world ever wrote.

Perhaps ultimately that will reduce the quality of the works we might see available for free (as in beer) on the web.

Naturally, because gods know that no one ever did anything creative unless they got paid for it. And should any one of them be treated rudely even once, /especially/ without being paid for the insult, the world would stop and we'd all fall off. :P

Fine, you can disagree with me on that. It's your right.

How generous of you. I didn't know my disagreement required permission.

But, as someone else said, it's also just rude.

Cheers,
Mike
