The Athlons are usually power hogs, I'd guess that the RS/6000
might draw a bit less power.
I've got a similar problem. I'm using a 2-processor Opteron
that requires a 550 watt power supply and really heats up my
computer room. I'd also like to leave it on 24/7 but can't
afford it. What I really need is some very tiny box that will
run LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP) and function as an off-line
web development server. So far, I haven't found anything.
However, the thought occurred that an X-Box game console rigged
to run Linux just might do the trick! Does anyone here have
experience in Linux'ifying an X-Box? A side effect would be
to stick it to MS since I think they subsidize the purchase
cost ($150 US) to be competitive with PS2. The X-Box comes
with a built-in Ethernet port. I'd even give credit on the
web site, thanking MS for the sweet Linux platform!
