We use a standalone app. They don't need to be tied together. THat way we get the features we want in both. When I'm forced to use windows, you'll see me with VS6 (I don't own, and don't see myself buying .NET) open to debug and emacs open to edit. Hate to admit it, but MS got a lot of things right with the VS debugger.
