Well, there is a particular missing link.
Businesses want vocational training, but don't want to do it or pay for it.
Most want everything for nothing. They get what they pay for, and it shows.
Most of those programs are now gone. Businesses regard training as a
useless expenditure via the following reasoning:
"Well, if we train them, they'll just leave and get a better job
elsewhere."
Yup.
This, of course, ignores the fact that this happens only when the
employees feel they are treated like crap. Which is everywhere,
nowadays.
Yup, yup, yup, but...
Well, not everywhere, but nearly.
I am finally back at one of three companies in my life that I've enjoyed
working for (those three, in the order I worked for them: NCR, DEC, Quake
Global [was Quake Wireless]). The last one is where I'm at now as a Software
Engineer. I started in Jan. I will have a salary and performance review in June
- the same month I graduate with my first BS degree - and I expect a raise. I
have had a review already to outline my mostly self-imposed goals for the year.
When (not IF, *when*) I meet those goals, and *when* I exceed them I will get
a bonus. If I finish my current project early (I am on track to do so) I will
quite probably get paid time off (even though I don't technically have the
vacation time accrued yet). I have input on many aspects of the company, as do
all employees, and I have voluntarily assisted in areas already that are not
directly within my job description, and have enjoyed it and have been
appreciated for it.
Tough the company can't (at this time) afford to spend money on my tuition,
they fully support me in other ways regarding my education. There are,
including myself, three employees (of 16) going to school and the company likes
the idea of all of us continuing to better our knowledge and education. They
know that as long as they treat us well, we will give 200% and not look to
leave.
That said, now I need to write a separate post about two things my company
needs.
