There is no reason why you cannot use a tool to index your maildirs and
have your client use that. This seems to be what Cyrus does. Now, I have
not looked at what Cyrus really does to determine if it is as
bulletproof as it is claimed, so I simply do not know. I suspect that if
it is (save the index - which can be recreated upon corruption[1]), then
it is using a Maildir-style system anyway[2].

[1] Does Cyrus automatically rebuild that index, or does it take
operator inervention? What if that index is purged?

[2] One message in a file in a directory doth not a Maildir be, That is
only one small part. It is, however, the most obvious part.
