Looks like it's mostly a wrapper around java's drawing stuff. Not that java invented these ideas. It looks very similar to applets, with a lot of the grunt work taken care of for you. But I'm mostly speaking ex-recto since the last time I played in java thick-client land, swing hadn't been invented yet.
