I can point out the set of features that Linux was lacking in the same time frame. However, the discussion would be pointless. All operating systems have moved forward.
Linux and *BSD have different targets. This is a *good* thing.
I've always thought that, if you want a *really* secure box (you're a Colombian drug lord, say...) then you'd go BSD. Of course, SELinux would be nice if the sysadmin knew how to use it.
If you are a Columbian drug lord, you go with a high-end AS/400 from IBM. Lots of them. And you use them for data mining to find who the snitches are in your organization.
The scary part is that this is actually true. I wish I could find the article I read about this.
