I believe you are referring to Thomas Alva Edison who felt sleep was a waste of time so he taught himself to live on the sleep achieved in "cat naps". He programmed himself to awaken when the keys he would hold in his hand fell and hit the ground. He must have been quite adept in going from beta to delta and back again in record time.
