I just tried mplayer and it worked perfectly.  But Xmms and others
either won't play back or still skip.   I didn't even need to set the
fps in mplayer, it worked perfectly.  That is really odd.

I've had that happen on my laptop a few times. I used mplayer and changed
it's 'fps' for audio to speed it up, then I found the sound playing too
fast, took the options away from mplayer, and everything was back to normal
