According to:

http://www.copyright.gov/docs/regstat5201s.html

The copyright office requested a budget of approximately $35,000,000 for
2002. Not much in the grand scheme of the whole federal budget but to me
$35M is still a lot of money! I bet the court costs associated with all
of the copyright suits are pretty large also. Look at how much SCO alone
has paid to kill Linux on the ground of copyright (or was that license
violation? Whatever it is this week...) and not only that we are paying
all of this money every year so that Mickey Mouse can retain copyright
protection for 100 years (and counting). We should have been able to
copy and view the old Disney movies for free a long time ago instead of
still having to pay for them. So it is costly to us in many ways.
