The patent says it all.

to replace the entire patent office with a rubber stamp if they see
this as a patentable invention.

The patent process is broken. The onus is on the patent filer to search for prior art. There is little incentive to do a thorough job if you are a company like MS who has deep pockets to defend an illegitimate patent.
