Thanks! What is async and why fixes NFS problems like slowness?
I use Autofs to NFS mount directories. Does this async
gotcha still apply?

The client doesn't wait to hear back from the server that the write was done successfuly. In sync mode, the client does wait to hear back, so this is obviously slower, but more reliable.

the hard and soft attributes will also prevent you fron hanging when the server dissapears. And the intr option if you change your mind....
see mount(8) for more details

I always use soft and intr. The only problems I have with my server are a) not as reliable as it should be because I run dual Athlons vs. dual MPs and b) if I leave memory leaking applications like Mozilla running too long it'll reboot.

I will be upgrading it to FC3 soon I think. It's still running RH 9.0 because I'm always on it for some reason and hate to take it down even for a few hours while I upgrade.

(funny thing is if I wanted to, I could back up all the HDDs from it onto my laptop before the upgrade and still have room to spare on the laptop! :o )
