What do you mean by a 'distributed patch oriented system'? Subversion and CVS can be used over the Internet...is that what you mean by 'distributed'? One could say they are also patch oriented. I think Subversion /could/ be fine for kernel but I think Linus /does not want/ to be distracted by the file level info Subversion can provide. I could be wrong.
