I'm sure that your observations are true, but so far, cari is the best
deal for the least price that I've found. SuSE works for me, it's what
I use at work. I don't know how cari's firewall works, I haven't used
it yet. I've been using the SuSE built-in firewall functionality.
The hosting service that I use has to be very inexpensive, I don't expect
to make any money from it except as a tax deduction. I donate the
web serving and email processing to a local non-profit, which historically
comes nowhere close to 1.2-TB/mo!

99% of our customers don't even come close to 30Gb of bandwidth per
month. So, that is where we set the bar. We include 30Gb of bandwidth
per month.
BTW - What can you burst to ? Or are you at 4Mbps capped ? At M5 you
can burst to 45Mbps.
Bandwidth is cheap when you buy it in the heapin' helpings that Cari
buys it, and the bandwidth they buy is especially cheap to begin with,
but John's absolutely right on. Being that he has several years
experience at ISP's, and I am a provider of dedicated servers, I'll
bet your getting some pretty good info here. :o)
There's no doubt that $62.50 is a low price. If it works for you, then
that's great. I notice they charge $100 to install Mandrake, Trustix,
or FreeBSD, and don't even offer OpenBSD or NetBSD. I notice they do
not offer WhiteBox or CentOS. We charge $0 to install any of those.
They charge $100 to custom partition, we include it. They don't say if
their "Firewalled behind Cisco PIX" is shared or dedicated to you,
they charge $50/mo for that. We include any firewall rules you want
behind our border firewall, which is shared to all customers (OpenBSD
PF bridged). If you want no rules, then you can have no rules (the
default is no rules... wide open, both ways). They "Discourage IRC
activity", we have no such policy or statement. It's pretty well known
that if you get spam complaints at Cari, they shoot first and ask
questions later. Often, the complaints turn out to be without merit,
but the server customer suffers a temporary disconnect. We confirm all
complaints before action. I won't even talk about the difference in
the bandwidth, that's been beaten to death already in previous threads.
So, 20 months, FreeBSD, partitioned the way you like it, firewall
rules....

1.2TB/month is the equivalent of almost 2Mb/s There's no effing way on
Earth they're giving you that kind of connectivity for $62 per month,
even considering the absolute cheapest, crappiest bandwidth provider in
the world.
How much bandwidth do you actually use? How do they monitor and bill
for it? What kind of throughput do you actually see? I'm guessing
either you're capped at a much lower rate and haven't noticed, or that
if you actually started using that kind of bandwidth, you'd be getting a
surprise in your next bill :-)
