On my distro, one needs to have "alsa-utils" installed, which provides
an alsasound initscript.  In the config file for this initscript there
are variables called "SAVE_ON_STOP" and "RESTORE_ON_START" that I must
set to "yes".  (Actually, they're already set that way.)
