Yeah. Actually there is a file called /etc/fedora-releasever (or
something similar) that contains the value.  

Now I remember that when I migrated from Fedora core 1 to 2 y tried to
do it in a apt-like way, changing the variable and doing a yum update.
It failed catastrophically and I had to use CDs to reinstall.  But I
have seen that yum has been improved.
