Trust me, even the "enterprise" backup systems have significant UI issues. Just because it's pricey, has a big name, and is in use by all sorts of Fortune 500 companies doesn't mean it's "better". :)

Besides, a lot of the big names literally just use the OS's "native" data format for streaming to tape, anyway. NetVault, for instance, uses cpio on unix and Windows Backup format on Windows. The upshot is that you can pull your data off of tape in an emergency. The downshot is that these aren't always the most resilient data formats to put to tape.
