FlightGear is not a game. It is a *flight simulator*. As such, it is rather ... unforgiving ... relative to a flight *game*.

It is a game with a flying theme. It simulates flight about as well as
Gran Turismo simulates driving. Sure, it's impressive from a computer
science point of view. It's pretty darn useless as far as using the
simulator and then getting into a plane/car and actually going somewhere.

Are you *sure*?

We had a very nice presentation at Sandpyt about the vagaries of simulating different aircraft/instruments/etc.

One of the more fascinating parts was the discussion about making some of the instruments *less accurate* so that they better reflected what those instruments would do *in reality*.

There were quite a lot of complaints from people who were using it as a game as it has gained increasing measures of realism (read: touchier aerodynamics and less accurate cockpit information).

Obviously, it has limitations. But, as I understand it, there are quite a few people working on the code who really do understand flight and flight simulators. I also believe that there are a couple of commercial companies who have licensed the code and made products with it.
