Quantum (from latin "How much?") mechanics deals with discrete units.
Newton's classical mechanics considers things in a continuous fashion.
However, that has nothing to do with whether something is linear vs
non-linear which is instead determined by the mathmatics used to describe
the situation.

I think you friend doesn't really know what he is talking about. Actually,
when it comes to quantum mechanics, very few people know what they are
talking about.
