I think this is an excellent idea. We need some more range on our wifi
routers though. Right now none of us live anywhere near one another to
make the connection. WiMax might do it but that is still line of site
only and I don't have line of site to any kpluggers except maybe Neil if
we both put up tall masts. Another technology will be needed I suspect.
We also need some more deregulation of the spectrum to implement that
other technology, whatever it is.


Ham operators communicate using wireless all the time. You can select certain side-band frequencies at any given time and nearly always here sounds similar to those old, antiquated dial up modems we used to have (remember those? ;) ). At one time I had a duplex repeater that could be setup to do it. All I needed was a ham license and I could have put it on top of a local mountain (OK, more like a hill - Rattle Snake in El Cajon) and been all set with a large coverage area (like most of East County).

The moral of the story, it can be done, for those willing to do it.
