I stay under the radar with my work machine by copying the knoppix .iso to the 
hard
drive.  No partition needed.  The downside is that you do need media to boot 
from. 
You use your knoppix cd or dvd, and tell it to 
bootfrom=/dev/hda1/my_knoppix.iso at
the boot prompt.  After that you can remove the CD/DVD and have the use of that
drive back.

It isn't the sweetest Linux setup I've ever used, but it's good and I stay out 
of
trouble with the PC police.
