Correct me if I'm wrong but to get the kind of bandwidth he will need to
download weather charts while at sea I think he probably will need the
things Mark mentioned.

Both Inmarsat and Iridium have the bandwidth. There is no need for a dish for either network. The problems are a) the market is small making the price of uplink hardware high (like the early days of cell phones) and, b) the market is small making bandwidth fees high (like the early days of cellular), in the area of $0.75/KB or some such.

We are looking at lower cost modems. It won't be long before some company (or group) will provide lower cost, wireless access on a global and portable scale.
