Vim has a pretty powerful macrosystem. You don't need source unless
you want to turn vi(m) into something barely resembling an editor.

I've set up vim to get a pretty useful Java development system. I
can type :mak and it will compile the tree for me (using ant) and
them take me to the first line with an error (and I can jump to
other lines should I wish); I can hilight an import and jump to
the source for that class; etc. etc.

And I didn't even finish the customization. I got what I wanted to work
working, and then I moved on with getting things to work.

I, too, have tried emacs several times. And, despite having been a
microemacs user for a couple of years, it just doesn't stick. I already
have an environment I like, I don't need another layered on top. If
Linux and Apple die and I'm forced to use an M$ system for the rest
of my life, Emacs will become far more interesting.
