eMusic.com support a linux download client and uses mp3 format.  It's a
subscription service, though, and their selection leaves more than a bit
to be desired.

emusic is a few of the smaller labels only. So very low selection. It is also not a subscription anymore- you pay a monthly fee for a cap of 40 songs a month. Use them or lose them.

I recently heard rhapsody.com supported linux, but I couldn't get it to
work with Firefox 1.5.


Rhapsody is not mp3, its DRMed up the wazoo.
