There are more hits on simplifying the google keywords list to
 linux install asus p4p800 -windows

Desperation thoughts:
 bios update
 linux ide=nodma
 linux acpi=off apm=off
linux i8042.nomux -- reported helpful for for kbd/mouse probs
 a SATA problem?
have you looked at a dmesg report from the alternate console
  (at start; then around slowdown/hang?)
disable "Enhanced Mode" for IDE controller (in BIOS options)
look for other (SATA?) bios options to disable
 acpi=on
play with bios interrupt-sharing options
pre-partition and format everything on the hard disk
 vdso=0
 mem=960M

Have you posted to the centos list?

The fact that post-install boot is slow maybe could be separately researched.

How about a debug kernel after install?

Man, hardware is hard!

I presume you have seen the hint at http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2126&forum=27

Yes. Actually I did see that. I am only installing by text mode. I tried
disabling ACPI in the BIOS.

regarding ACPI. That guy found satisfaction by disabling it in BIOS. I see that you have tried ACPI fixes, but it may be worth a careful retry after re-determining the proper command-line option. Is it just something like
  linux acpi=off

I'll try that too.

at the install command prompt. There is a HOWTO at:
  http://www.columbia.edu/~ariel/acpi/acpi_howto.html

I have installed centos4.2 (on other MBs) without difficulty, but I do recall several other threads re other OS installs on other MBs reporting ACPI problems during install (but not after install) -- I guess the install kernel doesn't always provide compatibility with all hw environments.

Read those too.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, I recall centos installs having sporadic difficulty with different CDROM devices. In particular, the ISO image verification step often failed, but the install proceded ok, if verification was skipped. Do you have other CDROMs you can try?

Tried different drives, different images, different media. Tried USB and IDE
drives.

Another thought: have you tried text-mode install?

Always text. These are rackmount servers. No mice. Monitors only attached long
enough to install.

Quoting Michael J McCafferty <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

All,
I am having a hardware issue... or maybe it's a software issue. Whatever it is is driving me nuts. It takes an hour to install a minimal install of CentOS 4.2 (tried 4.1 too), either the ServerCD or from the regular set of CD's. See it psyched me out, I thought it was hanging at /sbin/loader, but it was just going VERY slow... it takes about 10 to 15min to get past that point. Once it gets past that point, the installation program runs super slow. It's
almost exactly as this person describes here:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Linux/Linux_Setup/Q_21378016.html But none of the proposed fixes solve my problem.

To top it all off, once the system is installed, it's glacially slow to boot
up.

Hardware:
ASUS P4P800-MX-UAYZ Motherboard
1 80GB Western Digital SATA HDD
No floppy
No IDE CDROM
Celeron 2.8Ghz
1GB Kingston PC2700 RAM

CentOS 3.5, OpenBSD and Debian Sarge all install fine, at regular speed. I have 6 of these boards, all exhibit the same behavior. WTF ? It's not an option to
not support CentOS 4.

I have tried several different ISO images, from different mirrors, on different media, burned on different burners. I have tried USB CDROM (preferred method), and IDE CDROM. I tried different boards (same model of course), with different
CPU's (2.53 and 2.8), and different RAM.

I have tried disabling Audio, Floppy, USB, ACPI. I have tried the SATA in
"Compatible" mode and "Enhanced" mode.

Thoughts on boot flags, other BIOS settings ? I need to be able to customize each installation, but I can't have it take so freakin' long ! Yep, I Googled
it, but maybe your suggestions will be better than those I found.

Thanks In Advance,
Mike
