What gets a distro on your list? Why isn't $MY_FAVORITE_DISTRO on the
list, for example? Also, does this mean these are the only ones
*you'll* install for $ME, or they're the only ones I get whether I'm
willing to do the install or not?

Good questions. These are the ones that we offer on the web site to the unwashed masses (I acknowledge that most of my customers are generally *nix savvy, but there are some that aren't). They are the ones that we can most easily support if called to do so. They are also the ones that we know will install and run on the hardware, without issues. We know that the install will work from a USB CDROM drive, the NIC works, the drive interface is supported (IDE/SATA/SATA II etc), and all of it works on the platform chosen (Intel 32bit/64bit AMD 64-bit, etc.), and that there is a RAID option that works on all the OSes we use (it's been a 3ware card for about 5yrs now). To save cost, and minimize administrative overhead and other costs (keeping spares, etc), we choose a single hardware configuration which can be scaled by adding RAM or changing disk size or using a faster CPU. Why isn't your OS on the list ? We haven't tried it or we haven't found a good way to support it's use. A good example is Gentoo. I am sure it works great, but if someone on the other side of the planet wanted to do a stage 1 install, or compiles themselves into a non-booting system, they *could* be much more overhead to support than the others. We *are* working on this though. We are gonna get some KVM over IP going, for this purpose. It's too expensive to have a dedicated port per machine (at least at $99/mo), but we can have the NOC hook it up to the right machine 24x7. Can you put your own OS on a box ? Sure ! No problem. I get a lot of people that want stuff like the InstantOGO CD (http://www.instantogo.com/) installed or another Linux "Appliance" distro installed (a recent request was http://www.nuonce.net/bluequartz.php ). Those two are based on OSes that are known good for us (Fedora and CentOS), so no problem there.

What is your $MY_FAVORITE_DISTRO ??? Maybe we will add it.

Mike
