Not the same. Whether you choose vim or emacs, TCL or GTK+,
ksh or zsh has ramifications for you that are visible and personal.
OTOH, if all tools supported all video formats then *which* format
each one barfed out would be irrelevant to Joe User.
Most video tools I know of *do* barf out all formats.
However, the big companies are not going to make the mistake they did
for audio and allow a format they do not control to become the lingua
franca of video.
In addition, storing those videos and serving them up on a website is
dependent upon compressability.
Why should I generate a movie in something other than Windows Media and
Quicktime? That serves 99.9% of the market.
Take a look at Anime Music Videos:

for a nice example of what it takes just to chew on video. And this
isn't even *big* video, it's just animation.
