SMART does work for ATA and SCSI. However, until very recently SMART was
not supported by the Linux kernel for SATA drives. But as of a month ago
or so support was added to the mainline linux kernel.
Maybe something regarding S.M.A.R.T changed as of a month ago, but it's
been in Fedora Core since at least FC2. So it must have been in the
"mainline" (i.e. Vanilla) because that is the source of all Redhat kernels.
However, I'm skeptical as to whether S.M.A.R.T is actually in the kernel
or is a driver. It doesn't make sense to put it in the kernel, as not
all platforms hard drives, let alone IDE and S.M.A.R.T. For instance,
when I recompiled the kernel for my laptop, I don't recall seeing any
option for S.M.A.R.T.
