It appears Fon is ready to hit the streets. They're selling WRT54GL routers for $33 (W/S+H) to the first 3000 comers. You have to agree to use it on their network, and they say they've regged it so you can't do anything else with it.

But you probably can reflash[1] the unit if you don't want to do the Fon thing anymore.

I like the idea but I wonder about the conflict with ISP-to-end-user
agreements, all of which I've seen say you can't sell or give away access to anyone outside your home.

Are the ISPs laying low about this? Don't want to be the bad guy? Don't know about it yet? Biding their time to see what happens?

If it ever gets popular, I'm sure ISPs will start doing something about it. Either send nastigrams, or just plain blocking communication to the Fon servers. As it is now, it is hard to think of any real benefits of FON over normal open access points. The only one I can think of is that they should have an automatically updated map showing available hotspots[2]. Since the routers can phone home, they should show real-time availability, but I have no idea if they have implemented that.
