VMware Player looks interesting. Is there a way to convert a dd(1)
image of an existing Windows98 disk into a VMware virtual machine? If
so I could finally retire my wife's old PC.

Some google searching gives clues, but no clear path for doing this.

You have to treat it as a hardware migration. The VM does not look like the PC to the OS. You will need to use some software that allows you to clone the machine to a different platform. The MS geeks use ghost for this, and that is a common approach touted by vmware. There are free solutions available for doing this, but you will still need to have VMware workstation to set it up initially, but you can get that for thirty days try before you buy.
