If you want to run Linux you have to buy Linux compatible hardware. Just like if you want to run Windows you don't buy a Mac. Why would you go to Best Buy looking for Linux hardware? That is the last place I would expect to find a hardware modem. About 5 years ago I bought a hardware modem at Fry's. I bet they even still have them. And I know you can get them from a number of places online.

Choose your software first then pick appropriate hardware. My Enpower laptop worked 100% with Linux. I never used NDISWrapper or any proprietary driver.
