Sure, but you only open that particular port(s)...
Just like if you don't open a particular port for web access or ftp access
they won't work either....

It's the same as always.  You have security and you have convenience.  The
most secure computer is one that doesn't do ANYTHING.  Especially talk to
anything outside of itself.
The trick is finding the acceptable middle ground.  Personally I wouldn't
worry about opening a port for bittorrent...

So unless I open my firewall BitTorrent will NEVER work?  Well
that stinks!  This seems like it will slow down BitTorrent's world
domination.
