Why do you have to edit that file? Like DJA, I've never had to do it.
Is it because you're booting from Windows's booter? Are you adding
an entry for Linux to the boot.ini? Or is it something else?
I think the object of the exercise was to use the Windows boot manager
to boot either Windows or Linux. This can be done, I did it once just
to see how it worked. But for Linux-oriented people the preferred
route is to use the Linux boot manager (Grub) to boot either Linux or
Windows.

Yes, the exercize was to use the Window's boot
manager. And that because I couldn't seem to
get Lilo work properly. I have never tried GRUB.
Dual booting Linux and W98 has always been very
easy with Lilo.
