Because you are one of those weird people who do strange and unusual things like use command lines on other systems on the Intarweb. Netgear's market is people who spend all day editing their MySpace pages and chatting on IM. These things require many very short lived connections such that this problem does not affect them. I supposed that by setting the NAT table timeout relatively low they can get by with less RAM. I heard that less RAM was one of the reasons they dropped Linux in favor of some other embedded OS on the majority of the WRT54G's they sell. It is a cost saving measure. Now you have to buy a special version of the WRT54G which presumably costs more if you want one that runs Linux.
