Or find someone who is writing decent code.

I remember spending a lot of effort writing CPL, and then I ran
across some written by a Prime Engineer, and being amazed. It did
so much more than my code did, and wasn't really all that much
more complicated than the code I was trying to write.

Good code is out there.  It's just hard to find.

They say the way to learn to write well is to read stuff by people
who write well, and then write your own.  What you write will start
off as crap, so you go back and read some more of the good stuff to
"see how it's done".
