Semiconductor based gyros (not sure if MEMS or not) have been around for years. RC helicopters use solid state rate gyros to help with yaw stability and have for a number of years. My dad is building an RV-7 airplane: http://www.vansaircraft.com/public/rv-7int.htm
And he is using the Blue Mountain EFIS/One instrument package:

Which has been flight ready for a few years and contains solid state gyros (absolute position gyros, not just rate gyros) to determine the orientation of the airplane. Really cool stuff.

programming most applications etc. Let's be realistic (my philosophy
tangent here) in 20 years 90% of people will be programmers.....it's
just what you program. Methodologies take you most of the way there,

90% of people will be programmers? How so? Or do you mean that only 90% of programmers will be people? :)
