I would like to have 3.23 and 4.1 coexist for a while. Can I do that

separate binaries, config files, etc.?
The RPMs might, but the executables won't. I have had MySQL 5.0.x and MySQL 4.1 RPMs
installed on my laptop at the same time, but only because the RPMs were named mysql-4.1*
and MySQL-5.0* respectively. I couldn't even do rpm -U because of the difference in names.
The executables within the later RPM replaced those from the former, effectively removing
4.1 from the system.
The MySQL reference guide has a section on running multiple MySQL servers on
the same box.
Just curious, why not upgrade to MySQL 5.0.22? Is there something in the older versions
that has changed in the 5.0 release that would cause a problem? (Note: There are some
changes that *could* cause some issues when upgrading from older releases to 5.0,
especially from pre 4.1.)
