Firstly, I would think that D would be hidden to Windows.  By the BIOS
or something.  Secondly, C has to be NTFS or FAT if it's Windows XP,
so fdisk -l should know what it is.  What does Windows say the
filesystem types are?

No, they are visible.  I know I've seen the HP_RECOVERY partitions on
computers around here.  And they're either Fat32 or NTFS, I don't remember
for sure.
But to my knowledge they shouldn't have anything to do with not seeing
Documents and Settings on C:...
