My brother puts his wifi AP on the first floor of his house and claims he can connect from upstairs.
I did this for a year and a half with my neighbour. He gave us the WEP key and let us juice it all the time. The reception was garbage, but I at least had some connection to teh intarawebz.
I've got a litle RV and it seems if I move behind a counter my reception turns to garbage.
2.4GHz doesn't travel through metal objects well. 5.2GHz doesn't travel through *anything* all that well. Unfortunately, the two bands have very poor radioacoustic characteristics.
Anyone know about the physics and tricks to get great wifi coverage?
Better antennas. The stock antennas that come with access points are 9 times out of 10 absolute garbage. Get yourself a good, high-gain omni antenna and mount it as high as possible. Keep the antenna cable lengths as short as possible (ie. place the access point as close to the antenna as you can get it). If you want, and you have an access point that accepts antennas with RP-TNCs, I have an antenna desinged to mount in drop ceilings for which a non-drop ceiling mount could be made relatively easily. It offers 8dBi gain and excellent omnidirectional characteristics. Once I move back down to San Marcos (and of course, locate it) you're welcome to borrow it and see how it works for you.
I know 'line of sight' is the best but that may not always be possible.
Indeed, and sadly it rarely is! -kelsey -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
