The rewritable drive has a rewritable disc (with old files I don't care
about).
The command mounts the disc, but ro. I know I've done a rewrite before
on this type of disc, but I don't know why I can't get it now. Anyone
know what I should try?
This is a rewriteable CD? It doesn't use the same software interface
that you use for hard drives. It goes through ISO9660 layout with
something like K3B or other CD creation software.

Yes, it says "Rewritable" right on the disc. The icon that comes up
says "CD-RW". I was using Nautilus CD/DVD Creator. When I try to write
to it, it keeps telling me to insert a writable disc. The one that's in
there *is* rewritable. The only thing I could think of is that the
mount is stopping me with "ro", unless I stick a blank disc in there.
Hmmmm. Here's an odd thing. I just inserted an unwritten rewritable.
Nautilus CD/DVD Creator comes up along with the icon for "Blank CD-RW
Disc", but mount doesn't show it. Perhaps it's just a matter of
unmounting it altogether?
Well, that was it. With /dev/hdd not mounted at all, Nautilus is now
writing to the "previously-owned" (a.k.a. "used") CD-RW disc.
Thanks for the nudge Carl.
