How does Synergy work? Works fine. Copy/paste between computers is a bit funky. But, the fact that you can even attempt to copy/paste between computers is amazing in itself.
I found configuration to be a bit annoying because I have a mixed network. I am running Synergy between OS X/Windows or OS X/Ubuntu. It wasn't that difficult, but there is some strangeness with "feature X" needs to be set by doing "Y on OS X", "Z on Windows", and "Q on Ubuntu".
The only real annoyance was having to open the Synergy server port in the firewall configuration.
