I had a setup like that, and I often worked on the ``linux box'' without
taking down the internet connection. For a kernel upgrade, there was a
reboot. You get that with a linksys box, too, when you upgrade the
firmware.

If you adjust the firewall rules, you may lose the internet, but that
would happen not too often, really. And you should not lose the internet
connection, anyway.

I think the idea of ``linux box'' is to have a more powerful
router/firewall in place than the linksys and friends can provide, but
otherwise you run it very similarly.

This means putting something like RHEL or Debian Stable on it. If you
are putting Gentoo or Fedora on it, then, really, you deserve to have
your internet go down. Seriously.
