As most of you know by now I am a lurker on this site. And you also may know I sometimes have non "Politically Correct" opinions on some subjects.

The problem with dumping anything electronic (and a lot of other stuff for that matter) is that the government and big business perverted the environmentalists old methods of disposing of scrap from the user who was once able to SELL some of the items for a few bucks - car batteries is a good example - to making the consumer PAY to get rid of it.

This immediately caused many people to just dump unwanted items along side of any convenient back road (and sometimes NOT so back roads) rather than have to pay to get rid of it.

They also made it illegal to dispose of "Hazardous Materials" - INCLUDING DRY CELLS - by any other means - including dumping them in landfills. There is a fine for doing this if you get caught. Dry cells at this point are still free to dispose of - some distributors will take old batteries when you buy new ones. Radio Shack I believe is a free drop off point without purchase. Most other items are not so easily disposed of.

Go to Earth-911 for detailed info on this and links to other sites for further info on Hazardous waste. San Diego County has more info on their site.

The one that really floored me was when I investigated the reason for making CRT's - TV and Computer - hazardous was NOT the chemicals for the screen but the LEAD IN THE GLASS. How many eons is it going to take to leach the lead out of the glass?

91%? i think higher if we are talking battaries. Lets face it, driving to
the miramar landfill can be a serious hassle for some of us. Traffic, time, gas, etc. I doubt the city is seriously concerned with this problem. If they
were concerned, then maybe they would pick up batteries on recycling day.
More likely they simply wanted to appease some people or be compliant with
some other law... On a side note, any chance we could start a battery
recycling bin at the meeting and perhaps one of our UCSD friends could just
dump them off?

You can tell you have created God in your own image when it turns out
that he or she hates all the same people you do.
